I recently read an article in the Wall Street Journal about millennials (my generation) not willing to work over the holiday break and less frequently working overtime. The media has featured story upon story about young people being “lazy”. Of course, these stories are overblown but there is some underlying truth that workers are reevaluating the role of work in their lives and placing less emphasis on it.
The start of the new year is a natural inflection point for thinking about what you want your life to look like in five years. For some in the FIRE community, the new year is time to ramp up your savings. Maybe you want to travel more this year or get a promotion at your job. Whatever your goal is, take some time to flesh it out at the beginning of the year and work out the steps to get there. There are dozens of habit planners online for free that can guide you through the process. This month, my wife and I are attending the half day 2023 Goal Setting Retreat hosted by Brandon Turner to figure out our family and business goals so that we can design our life to our desires.
In 2022, I reached two of the ten goals that I set for myself and most of me wants to sulk in defeat but the truth is that it doesn’t matter. No one is keeping track of my failures and I get a chance to change every day I am alive. My advice to you is the same: No one is keeping track of your failures. Just get up and try again.
